Magic Mouse 2 for production

Post by apaclin »

Hey peoples!

To those who use Magic mouse 2, how convenient is it in writing automation with the scrolling function? So basically you would ride a fader by scrolling on the surface which is like using a touchpad.

Is it comfortable?

it works that way as a fader, exactly as a touchpad. however IMO it's less precise than a scroll wheel, even though these are usually stepped.

it is as comfortable as a mouse can be. I've always used a magic mouse before I got the tracking ball. tracking ball is better, my shoulder rests better than with a mouse. my wrist never suffered with the magic mouse tough, which is a common thing with mice.

I actually tried a trackball and went back to mouse just cos it's twice faster :D

I’ve never really taken to the Magic Mouse for controlling a DAW and much prefer something like a Logitech MX or M705 which offer far more programming options.

Apart for actually typing names I run the whole DAW from a Logitech mouse and an Elgato Stream Deck.

What is this sorcery?

That looks very cool if it works like I imagine. Can you expand?

(Apologies for fork but may be relevant).

Well Seamus - it is sorcery - thinly disguised as a keyboard shortcut device!

I use the 15 button one. In a nutshell you save keystrokes to a button along with a graphic or text representation of the action - but then the device responds to whatever app you're in, so you then have a bespoke layer of keystrokes (with their associated icons) for that app.

What's more you can have up to four layers per app.

As well as basic keystrokes, you can open apps and programme other stuff.

Just as an example here are three screen shots of how I have it setup:

This is my home screen - basically an app opener:

Here's my home screen for Logic:

The key is:

'EDIT' - go to next edit layer on the Stream Deck
'X' - Delete
'A' - Open automation window
'B' - Bounce
'BIP' - Bounce region in place
'HOTKEY' - Used to open UAD Control (Now not used)
'C' - Cycle mode
'M' - Set marker
'</>' - Navigate between markers
'Bent Arrow' - Undo
'<<' - Scrub back
'|<' - Stop and go to last play position
'>||' - Play/Stop
'Red Dot' - Record

And here's the Edit Layer:

As above or labelled accordingly.

So yes - it's a wonderful piece of sorcery!!!

Very swish.

I'm not sure I work enough across apps to justify exploring further and I do a very (very) cut-down version of this workflow with a wireless number pad.

The important part for me has been organising my custom macros (in Reaper) in my head, remembering that they exist so I don't reinvent the wheel for every project then keep tabs on the relevant keystrokes.

This obviously has limited extension and your unit would not only have greater capacity but also pictorial reminders as to where my head is at.

V cool.

Apologies again for the meanderings.
