I use Acoustica Mixcraft which I read somewhere is 'Garageband for the PC'. It certainly has Virtual Instruments, but as it's not something I'm into I don't know if it's what you're looking for...

When Garageband first came out its nearest equivalent was probably Sonic Foundry's Acid on the PC. Magix have revamped it over the last few years and there's a review at

I know someone who uses it as his main DAW and gets some decent results with it.

Might be worth looking at Cakewalk as well?

Re: is there anything like garageband for the pc
thanks for the replies guys...
she uses garageband because the virtual instruments are very intuitive and there is virtual bass, guitar and synths and keys as well as the drum thing. because she has limited movement in her hand ie she cant hold a mouse ,she uses a stylis so it needs to run on a touchscreen computer.she might be able to use a track pad on a laptop..
ill have a look at acid.i did look at mixcraft and it looks very similar to garageband

Certainly worth a look, there are plenty of uTube tutorials & explanations [too many perhaps]. I looked at Garageband on uTube and it appeared to have quite a bit of drag and drop style content.
Cakewalk is comprehensive and free but its more about building projects up from scratch.
There are some loops & drum patterns but I cant comment on them.
The incorporated instruments include..
TTS1 general midi synth
SI string section
SI bass Guitar
SI Drum kit
SI electric pianos
as well as the usual suspect effects.
Cakewalk will of course run any 3rd party VST synths & effects you install

The free version of Waveform by Tracktion is pretty good. It has a program to generate MIDI patterns and chord progressions so could be useful for someone who only has the use of one hand. Any DAW that accepts VST plugins has a huge array of virtual instruments available. Many are free, you just need to download them.

I would suggest having a look at Ableton Live. You can try it for free. It has lots of audio clips, virtual instruments, effects, both audio and MIDI and works well on touch screen PCs, especially if you're using a stylus.

MuLab
https://www.mutools.com/mulab-product.html
This is the a good free DAW for Windows.
This DAW can run any VST instrument and comes with many synths and instruments too.
The developer gives away the keys for the fully unlocked DAW: https://www.mutools.com/m8-temp-user-keys.html
