Go to unread posts not working?

Post by The Elf »

I'm clicking on the red box on the left, which always used to take me to the earliest unread post, but it seems to be flakey now. I'm not sure what the pattern is - sometimes it works and sometimes it takes me to the start of the thread.

For me, on Chrome (W10) it works most of the time now. On android sometimes it just takes me to the first post, sometimes it takes me to the top of the last page, the one thing it doesn't do is take me to the most recent unread post! ;)

Only occasionally works on Firefox on Windows.

Never on the Fire tablet silk browser.

Looks like I'm not alone, then.

Still very hit and miss for me too on Brave/Windows 7, but it does at least always send me to the most recent page.

This is still happening. Occasionally it takes me to the last post, but more often it takes me to the top of the last page.

Having been frustrated by this not working, I came and found this zombie thread.

I feel as if I remember a software upgrade in the last year or so. Hoped this might work better, but it appears not to. Am I right in thinking that it never/rarely works for everyone else?

Is there anything that can be done about it?

I get the same results as The Elf's in his post above, but it's not as bad as "never/rarely" - probably works properly more than half the time.

I'd say it's about the same as Kwackman for me.

I've just accepted that it's never going to work like it used to unless the actual forum software developers finally fix the feature.

Pretty much my approach. I found other ways to work and I just don't use that feature at all any more.

I was trying the unread posts button once again and thinking how annoying this is and wondering whether to start a thread here on the subject but here it already is. Before the upgrade that buggered it up it was one of my main tools for reading posts and I've missed it ever since.

When it first appeared as a bug we all asked for it to be fixed but the reply was there were more important problems to be sorted and it would be fixed one day but it was low priority. After years of the problem is it anywhere nearer the top of the pile yet? If not, could it be bounced up a bit? Extremely pretty please and I'll buy you a drink ...

I've got into the habit of workaraounds, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Sorry for my absence in replying sooner.

As a Forum Admin I have a Quick Link option that takes me to all Unread Topics/Posts, and this is it if you care to bookmark it:

Does this do what you need?

Sadly, not at all.
The problem is not seeing which threads have new posts, but that the link to read the first unread post doesn't work - taking you to a relatively random position in the thread, rather than to the first unread post.

Your quick link is actually worse than I was seeing as it shows all unread topics. Like many, I suspect, I inhabit a single forum. I'm quite happy with the indicators showing which threads have unread posts - it's getting to those unread posts that is the problem. This is basic forum functionality!

That’s weird!

When I click on the link it takes me to unread posts, but if I bookmark the link and then click on the bookmarked link it takes me to the search page!

(Safari on an iPad Pro)

Be nice if it did work ……….
