Linn and Roland vintage drum samples?

Post by MrWriter »

Does anybody know the best site to get LinnDrum and LM-1 and Roland R8 and 808 drum samples?

There are loads of sites offering them, but how can I know which are going to be good and which will be crap? I'm assuming people who have these machines have just created samples off them, which means some might have been done in a dodgy way with a mic up to a a speaker and others done properly.

Any recommendations/links for good examples?

I use logic and I'm spoiled by their vintage drum machine pack which includes LinnDrum, Roland CR76 (My favourite, for reasons of nostalgia) Roland 606, 808 and 909, Sequential DrumTrack and Simmons SDS-V. (for some Genesis 'Home by the Sea' goodness or Eastenders intro theme :) )

I have not tried it but Big Fish audio has a reasonably priced pack called appropriately enough 'Vintage Drum Machines'

The demo appears to sound pretty well sampled and well, vintage drum-machiney

I use Logic too. Vintage drum machine pack does not come with it, I assume? Who makes 'Vintage Drum Machine Pack'?

In Logic, select Logic Pro > Sound Library > Open Sound Library Manager

Then in the Sound Library Manager window twirl down Sound Packs and check on Vintage Drum Machines, then click on install.

Then enjoy :)

I got mine from there long time ago and I think some of them were free, but not anymore apparently.

I appreciate this isn't perhaps exactly what you've asked for but if optimum reproduction of the original sounds is your goal then VPROM https://alyjameslab.com/alyjameslabvlinn.html is worth looking at. It's a Linn LM1 VST based on the original EPROMs and when you read more about the quirks of the original (e.g. how the hi hats are created) you'll appreciate that straight samples never quite cut it if you want the full variety of sounds it was capable of. It only contains the LM1 sounds but if you go hunting for it, there is an unofficial .fxp file out there that will load the LM2 / Linn Drum samples as well.
