Not spam. Just a small user error which accidentally sent a PM to every member rather than one specific person. And then those with the preference set also received an email... and more emails when some replied to the original PM.

It wasn't malicious and it wasn't a hack. Its just an embarrassing mishap.

Shouldn't allow a feature to contact every member.

The feature is there for legitimate admin purposes, but it shouldn't have been accessible to ordinary forum members. None of us realised it was accessible, and it is being investigated and will be fixed.

So, apologies for the inconvenience. It will be fixed as soon as possible, but there may be some echoes through the weekend as others find and report it!

I'm getting them as well. Nice to feel wanted by such luminaries, but can't offer much on the subject in question I'm afraid

I had to Google this and I learned what Hanlon's Razor is today.

A most excellent and useful concept, thank you!

Just goes to show that out of every disaster comes a learning opportunity.

Still a bit baffled as to how it's accidentally possible to click on 'Create New Private Message" and then add both lists of all 'Registered Members' and all 'Moderators' into the recipient field and then click 'Send'. But hey, my Mac updates itself overnight even when switched off these days so who knows what kind of mischief our machines get up to when we're asleep.

I had thirteen pm's this morning, all from different people, about the same subject, a T-Rex pedal, very strange, definitely not finger trouble.

The value and joy I get from this forum far outweighs any inconvenience a few messages in inbox might cause.

Absolutely- and there was no malicious intent/spam.

I have no idea about how IT and emails work, but I was expecting to find many, many PMs this morning as people hit reply on the original ones to create a PM howlround.
If someone in background managed to stop that happening- he/she/they should take a bow.

It could have been so much worse!

There are currently 117,172 registered members on this forum. If they'd all responded to the first mass PM we'd be drowning in recirculating PMs by now!

Clearly, a lot of people have not selected the option (in My Control Panel) to accept PMs, or to receive an email notification when a PM is received.

Phew! :D

I have to say it's not the most obvious feature of the forum to negotiate in a hurry.

I got my extra 8 messages, I'm feeling loved again.

Feature request. Would it be possible to have an option to delete all marked messages? It takes a while when you've got a lot to go through and you have to do them one at a time. I accept it would be a nice to have rather than essential - at least you can delete them.

You can, because I did it yesterday.
Mark the messages you want to delete, then at the bottom of the list there was a drop down to select "Delete Marked Messages" or similar.
This is from memory, so expect a few inaccuracies!
