My new, super-intelligent mixer - Mackie dl1608

Post by shufflebeat »

My Mackie dl1608 has been looking increasingly forlorn in the past few years but this morning's explorations mean I'll be (metaphorically) dusting off the cobwebs and reintegrating it into my smaller gigs.

It may be that everyone concerned is already aware of this but the big bag of pennies have just dropped for me so...

Here's the dilemma:

* Dl1608 has the old 30 pin Apple connector
* 30 pin iPad 3 (iOS 9.3.5) can't run Mackie Master Fader 5
* 30 pin iPad 3 is gradually grinding to a halt with new updates, including MF4
* Lightning connector iPad (2019) can't dock to dl1608

Possible courses of action:

* Refit the dl1608 to take lightning connector (makes iPad 3 obsolete)
* keep running old version of MF4
* Don't refit but update dl1608 firmware for MF5 (makes docking system and iPad 3 obsolete)

But...

I've been messing with incorporating the iPad 3 into my acoustic guitar signal chain with an iRig Stomp pedal and it came to me that I can:

* Update to MF5, run dl1608 from newer iPad (2019) or Android tablet
* Dock iPad 3
* download old versions of apps via "purchased" section of App Store
* Route an Aux send to the docked iPad, return via stereo "iPad" channel.

Apps available:

* IK "mic room" mic modelling software
* IK Amplitube Acoustic FX with lots of FX "pedals" to buy
* Garageband, inc. FX
* Ampkit
* Altispace - great reverb
* Many, many others.

Yay!

I find keeping the good coffee in an old marmalade jar in the fridge makes it last much longer - the kids don't like marmalade.

As I'm mostly retired from live sound now and not even doing the fairly infrequent gigs with the band my DL1608 can stay on MF4 and my iPads 2 and 3 likewise.

Got to get with the times, Sam.

In my case, 2014 - or thereabouts.

That recent hey :bouncy:

TBH I'd be happy with MF 2/Classic if it had better reverbs (though they were usable in non-critical applications). Simplicity was a major upside of the Mackie DL rig.

I was so impressed with your all-in-one Ryanair-ready transport and use solution that I copied it.

Such an elegant system, seems a pity not to use it. Get the gigs in, mate, those office workers won't entertain themselves this Christmas.

You're right, of course. Anyway, they don't need us any more, now they have cheap cocaine and Spitofy.
