Studio monitors makes weird buzz sound

Post by razmab »

Hello, I've had the focusrite scarlett 2i2 and adam audio t5v for about a year and have been very happy with both the monitors and the interface.

My main and only use for the setup is to listen to music on Tidal, Spotify, and Youtube. Recently, I've noticed that my monitors have been buzzing for no apparent reason, and that sometimes the entire song is suddenly squashed, and after closing the music source, song sounds as should.

Is there anything I can do to keep these problems from occurring?

Also, on the focusrite scarlett configurations, what settings should I use? (sample rate, buffer size)

As previously stated, I only use the aforementioned setup for listening to music via Tidal, Spotify, and Youtube.

Here's a link of a youtube reel showcasing what i'm suffering from

Thank you!

It might be that your buffer rate is set too low. If all you're doing is listening back to music and not recording then you can crank it right up.

Pretty much my first call as well.

Might be good to play a CD and see how that goes? After that, look at Task Manager and see if CPU hit is high, I would not expect it to be more than about 10% for internet and running the F'rite. You might have something running in the background.
If all else fails maybe download the 2i2 drivers afresh and re install them.

Dave.

Hi,
Thanks for the replay!

buffer rate equals to buffer size?
if so, my buffer rate is set to the highest at the moment.

attaching a screenshot of my scarlett 2i2 settings.

Hello razmab, welcome to the forum

We don't support attaching images here but if you upload one to imgur.com or similar, and then link directly to the image itself (as opposed to the page it's on) using the [img] ... [/img] tags then it should be displayed in-line in the forum.

Edit: I've seen your updated post and added the tags to it to make it display inline

Ok, so it's not your buffer size. As ef37A suggests, might be worth checking your task manager to make sure something else isn't hogging CPU.
Also worth checking you've got the latest drivers for the interface and that you've not got anything funny set in the audio settings of the PC.
Is the buzzing coming from one monitor or both and does it happen with headphones as well?

I have to say that's a very weird set of sounds and not something I've ever heard when my own computer audio drops out.

If the suggestions you've already been given don't work, it's simply a case of replacing each component in the chain one at a time to see if that's the one at fault - so try with different speakers, different audio interface (e.g. the computer's own audio out), different source (phone or tablet for example).

Hi,
thanks for the replay.
I checked and have the latest audio interface driver.
Issue is not happening when listening thorugh headphones.
Buzz sound is coming from both speakers.
task manager seems to be OK.

Could it perheps be a socket without grounding?

How — exactly — is the whole system connected?

And where are the headphones connected when things are working?

We're going to need a bit more detail I'm afraid! :)

Is everything plugged into the same wall socket? Are you connecting your monitors and interface with balanced cables? What else is plugged into the interface?

I'm trying to judge from your response to James' question - are you plugging your headphones into the PC soundcard not the audio interface?
If so, what happens when you use the interface?
