Yep, I couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s like the elixir of life, you know what it’s supposed to do but can never quite manage to get the potion quite right, but sometimes it just happens as if by some sort of sorcery
If I ever managed it, it’d be down to just plain dumb luck!
Definitely. I'm completely in awe of those people who can listen to a mix and say, "This needs two bars of melodeon just here" or "We need an oooh sha la la". I normally have to build a load of stuff up first then chisel away at it to get down to what's needed.
And I think I still tend to leave too much in.
Actually, I can't remember who it was, might have been Stevie Wonder I think and was asked what does his first reaction to a 'finished tune' and he says "Ask myself what I can take out, if a song can be stripped back to bare bones, then it is exposed in a raw state, and then I know if it is worth keeping"
Ah, you see there's a plan for that. This is now going to be part of an EP and the previous track will bleed directly into this one, so I will need to do some level balancing when I get to mastering. So I'll look at that at the time, thank you.
Yes (with a slight reservation).
The drone becomes too in-yer-face. Having established it's presence I would be inclined to fade it down quite a bit, so it almost disappears in the louder parts of the rest, which will then make it show up more and remind you of it it the quieter parts.
Just my 2d.

Noted, thanks folks, I shall add that to the snagging list.
My last comment seems to have vanished, but anyway, I concurred with the comment about the 'drone' and it being a tad too intrusive - but I'd miss it if it weren't there.
For some reason this track takes me back to The Incredible String Band, quirky but observant, sounds good

The Norwegian sounds good through the Avantone as well as the monitors. I thought the vocal would come back in at 2.45, but no - you left it later. Nice tune, Drew.
The thing that people are calling a drone sounds a better level tonight. Did you change it? Can one even do that on Soundcloud? Can you leave the uploaded submission where it is, but replace the sound file for that submission? That would be useful. But if you didn't change the mix, then I'd like to retract my previous question about drone level.

So, did you change it?
A) nope, not changed.
B) if you've got the pro version of soundcloud then you can replace the audio on a track without loosing any of the other stuff. But not on the freebie version.
The drone is actually the same part at the chords (it's a reed organ) but I think I should be able to automate the fundamental fairly easily with an EQ notch.
I love this. Not anything that I would ever listen to normally but its ace, think the mix stands up really well.
The only slight tweak I would make is that when the Leslie'd Hammond comes in there's a bit of a fight going on in the middle of the stereo image at 2-3K (ish) feels like you've pushed the level of the Hammond up to try and 'win' the fight but I reckon that makes it a bit too loud, is there any sort of of opposite eq you can do between Hammond and the bed parts and maybe pan the 2 away from each other just for that bit?
Might make it sit better, and be less of a punch in the face when it comes in.
Only a thought, its cool though mate, really cool.
