I would just like to point out that after reading through the recording meters thread, nothing I said had been covered before (not that I had read through it before I posted), but was just pointing out that the fader mechanism itself was not capable of providing any gain. Just reinforcing Sam's reply.
Not sure why Hugh locked it.

I locked it because it was a zombie thread re-opened by a newbie, without adding any particularly new or significant information relevant to the original thread. The OP's confusion over digital meter scales and fader scales had largely been resolved, and I saw no benefit in revisiting such an old topic.
There was nothing wrong in what was being added, just that there was little constructive point adding it!

It was the "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggghhhhhhh" that got me confused.
