Disting 4 Ratcheting Algorithm

Post by Durr GaGa »

Hi Folks,

I am trying to get the Clock algorithm (G6) to provide Ratchets but, most likely due to my inability to understand what is required, I can't get it to work!!

I am generating a Gate from my analogue sequencer that I am feeding into the X input of the Disting 4. My understanding is that I should be able to get a ratcheted Gate at various rates out from output A and/or B by adjusting a CV into input Z. I have tried numerous settings but all to no avail.

Have I completely misunderstood what this algorithm does? If not, can anyone suggest some settings that will achieve what I want from it?

Thanks

Steve

According to the manual, the G6 algorithm doesn't use input Z for anything:

"X is clock input
Y is run/stop input
A & B are clock outputs
Z is not used"

Rather it looks to me as if algorithm G6 simply converts between MIDI and analogue clocks. The manual does talk about parameters that can be used to set clock dividers but these values are controlled via the S knob and cannot be thought of as realtime controls, as mentioned elsewhere in the manual:

"Each algorithm may have up to six 'parameters', offering further control over the algorithm's operation. Unlike the Z control, which is sampled at the same high rate as the X & Y inputs, parameters should be considered coarse, non-real-time adjustments to the algorithm. They may cause glitching in the outputs when changed. Parameters are adjusted via the S knob. When changed, the parameter value is displayed for a couple of seconds."

So I'm afraid it looks to me as if you're trying to use the algorithm for a purpose that it wasn't designed for, and probably can't handle!

I am almost positive Oz did a video on how to do this ... but I find it easier to just use a burst generator module, tbh.

I've not watched it but there is a video from Expert Sleepers called disting mk4 - Clock algorithm - ratchet demo which might help!

Edit: I note that they are using the Z input in the video so perhaps the manual is out of date?

It should be noted that the Clock algo on the Disting Mk4 uses MIDI clock, not an analogue clock source.
