In the light of the 'Lord of the Bins' brouhaha, maybe the 'proper' SoS management should be issuing a 'cease and desist' notice...

(For the avoidance of doubt, this is a semi-humorous, 'twinkly' post with an underlying serious point. ;) )

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

Judging by some of the comments on Facebook I don't think the real SOS needs to worry about this being a long-term competitor... ;)

No, it looks like a bit of a disaster! But I expect it does violate an SOS trademark.

I wouldn't have thought so. I'm not aware of SOS running any events in the US. To have a valid trademark claim SOS would need to a) have registered the mark for that kind of activity, and b) be engaging in trade in that activity.

Like that shop owner changed his shop name from Singhbury's to Morrisinghs

::

I hope SoS laughs it orff does nothing about this.
As it always looks as spoilsport petty when a larger establishment cracks down on a small trader so forth : this would be a poor look for SoS.

Far better for SoS to be seen as a jolly good sport very British and laughing it orff.

An ideal opp0rtunity for SOS to have an article on copyright.
Which would obviously carry its weight in print over the 7 continents.

Well, maybe not. Copyright and trademark are very different things.

The term ‘sound on sound’ was in use long before the magazine existed. The term will have appeared in print in quite a few reel to reel tape operations manuals and adverts.

So reproduction of the name alone isn’t an issue. They would have to be duplicating the SoS magazine logo/font and be seen to be passing themselves off as associated with or representing the magazine before one would have any chance of being able to take any action at all. And without registered trademarks or brand names, it would be a hard task indeed.

Reliably fallible.

I think I read somewhere that the magazine's title was connected to a fondness for "Sound on Sound" LP by Bill Nelson by one of the original founders?

I reckon it was Les Paul who popularised the "Sound on Sound" technique, if he wasn't the actual inventor of it?

Cubase, guitars.

I believe Les Paul was the inventor, at least in a live musical context.

In high school electronic music class Sound on Sound was my favourite feature of the 1/4” reel to reel tape decks. I don’t recall if the switch/button was labelled SOS or Sound on Sound.
