Controller into Android phone

Post by ef37a »

Will it work? I have an Evolution Ekeys49 kbd controller and it works fine via USB into a laptop. I would like to know, if I get an A to micro USB adapter will it play on an Android phone? If so, can some software be suggested, preff free!

I understand 5V power might be an issue but I am sure I can kludge around that.

After reading this post, just now I connected my Korg Nano Key2 mini usb (not micro usb) via £2 usb C adapter to my android phone.
Power light indicator lights up on Nano Key2.
Nano Key2 plays the free Perfect Piano app fine.
Some music apps are only touchscreen so won't play from midi keyboard.

Thank T. Mini? Micro? I am talking about the USB port in most phones that do not use USB C or that Apple ****. Worth a do it seems.

Welcome E. When I had a Chinese brand Android phone with micro usb port (2017ish) I used a £2 micro usb adapter with my NanoKey2 worked fine if I recall.
NanoKey2 has mini usb port.
Currently have a Chinese brand Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 pro Android with usbC port as it still has headphone out which is a rarity these days.

If you have an older phone with a micro-usb port, you will need an "OTG" adapter. The phone expects to be a usb "peripheral", and the "OTG" converts it to a "host". Just a few pounds on Amazon or elsewhere. Very old phones don't support this functionality, but most do.

I should add that you may experience significant audio latency. This was a problem when I tried it some years ago. There have been initiatives to improve it. I don't know the current state of play. It may depend on how old your phone is.
There seem to be a few free piano apps on the Google Play Store that you could try it out with before spending much money.
