I also looked into H1n which seems to be very popular if not dominant among the smallest portable recorders. Built-in mics also seem to do decent job and it has relatively low self noise. What I didn’t like is poor build quality and plastic tripod jack. If I couldn’t find LS-10, I’d probably go with H1n.

Well, the inbuilt flash memory is four times that of the LS-10 and it‘s said to have improved sound qualities, bass and treble, but I guess that‘s arguable.

The LS-10 certainly has a noticeable bass roll-off)in addition to the switchable low frequency filter) I didn’t record much with mine but those I did, of bands in a pub, needed significant levels of bass boosting.
I presume this is because Olympus still regarded it as a glorified voice recorder and so expected it to be used fairly close to the source, and the roll-off negated the proximity effect.
The models that followed (LS-12 and LS-14) had a better low frequency response by all accounts.

Reliably fallible.

Never noticed that myself but the sort of music I record with these recorders is acoustic, non electric or amplified voice and instruments, but then that's folkies for you. These discreet recorders are great in sessions.

I tried both Windows and Mac firmware update programs for v1.20 which I downloaded from Olympus Japan’s website and am having same issue with both. Programs do not see LS-10 being connected, while it is as Mac and PC see LS-10 and allow full access to it’s files. Either V1.20 update programs have an issue and or my device. I’m still trying to find 1.10 firmware of anyone may have it somewhere in the archive. Thanks.
