Need Help with v1.10 Firmware update for Olympus LS-10. Can’t find it anywhere.

Post by Teppka »

Hi to all.

Have just ordered Olympus LS-10 which apparently has version 1.10.
I checked firmware links to all olympus download sources but they no longer exist. Olympus LS-10 product page which still seems to be live has no firmware files.
Chatting with support gave no results. Which is really strange, model may be old but there is a product page with user manual, why not leave firmware files there?

https://learnandsupport.getolympus.com/support/ls-10

I wander if anyone happen to have firmware 1.10 for this unit or can suggest where to look?
Thanks.

I don't understand...

You say you've ordered an Olympus LS 10 — a machine that was obsolete around 2012 — and that it has V1.1 firmware... but you want to download v1.1 firmware — which was released in May 2009.

Something's not adding up here.

With such an old machine it's not surprising that Olympus no longer list the file on their website. I'm surprised their customer support can't help, though. I'm not aware of any LS10 user groups, but if you can find one they might have an archive failing that, maybe a Web archive service like WayBack Machine can find it.

Sorry, it was a typing mistake, unit I ordered has v1.00. However I did find the latest firmware update on Olympus Japanese site which is apparently v1.20

Here is the info to update LS-10 to v1.20.

Download for Windows: https://cs.olympus-imaging.jp/jp/suppor ... pdate.html
Download for Mac: https://cs.olympus-imaging.jp/jp/suppor ... e_mac.html

v1.10 to v1.20 main changes:

Added index function
・ SD card compatibility has been improved and the confirmed card list has been updated.
(The phenomenon that may occur on some SD cards, cannot be initialized, and the recorded file cannot be seen will be improved.)
For confirmed cards, please refer to the "LS-10 Confirmed SD/SDHC Memory Card List"
There is a link to the List of SD/SDHC memory cards that have been confirmed to work with LS-10

Please refer to "LS-10 FW Ver.1.20 Additional Features" for new functions added by firmware update.
there is a link on the page to document in Japanese with all details.

I shall follow up on this. I still use my LS-10 as for its size I haven't seen any later devices whose improvements warrant the cost of upgrade. Olympus got an awful lot right with that little device. I've just checked, it's still at 1.10.

Thanks.

I was lucky to snag “like new” Sony PCM-D100. And after very long research for a smaller and lighter one decided to go with LS-10 which seems to tick all my boxes.

I’m new to sound recording and during my short time researching the subject, it’s amazing how best portable recorders are still seems to be those produced decade or longer ago.

No, I don't think I'd go that far. There's a lot of good current devices; it's just that the improvements don't, as I say, justify the expense of upgrade. If I was buying new I wouldn't seek out an LS-10, though I'm sure you'll be happy with what you've got.

If cost and size was not an issue then, for instance, Tascam's new Portacaptures beat the LS-10 for both quality of recording and ease of use and I'm glad I've got one of those. But the smallness of the LS-10 (and later similar devices) and the convenience of something that small that can make worthwhile recordings means I'm happy to have one of those too.

My main criteria was smallest device (smaller/lighter than D100 which I have) with lowest noise floor possible, standard tripod jack, great built in mics as I’m planning to use only built in ones, replaceable batteries and great built quality. Small device I could easily carry with me every day, low noise to record anything including nature, mount on my camera for occasional video shooting. I also don’t need XLR inputs. I was looking at recent OM System LS-P5 but it sees to be just too noisy. Also asked on another forum, recommendations were Sony M-10, Roland R-07 and few others. All of which are discontinued.

Just out of curiosity I’d be happy to hear your recommendation matching my criteria.

I would have tried to get hold of an LS-11 instead, if I was looking for that kind of device.

Well if I was replacing my LS-10 I think I'd start with Zoom's offerings. I've not used any of their small stereo recorders but I do have their H3-VR ambisonic recorder which is not much larger than an LS-10 and I've been pretty impressed by how well it performs, all things considered. So I'd suggest looking at their H1n recorder.

If you're willing to consider a larger (and more expensive) beast, which however does excellent recordings, I'd strongly recommend (having reviewed it in the current issue of SoS) the Tascam Portacapture X6. Meets all your criteria in spades except size.

So far as I recall (and apologies if I'm wrong) the LS-11 was identical to LS-10, except a different colour and a little cheaper.

I also looked into H1n which seems to be very popular if not dominant among the smallest portable recorders. Built-in mics also seem to do decent job and it has relatively low self noise. What I didn’t like is poor build quality and plastic tripod jack. If I couldn’t find LS-10, I’d probably go with H1n.

Well, the inbuilt flash memory is four times that of the LS-10 and it‘s said to have improved sound qualities, bass and treble, but I guess that‘s arguable.

The LS-10 certainly has a noticeable bass roll-off)in addition to the switchable low frequency filter) I didn’t record much with mine but those I did, of bands in a pub, needed significant levels of bass boosting.

I presume this is because Olympus still regarded it as a glorified voice recorder and so expected it to be used fairly close to the source, and the roll-off negated the proximity effect.

The models that followed (LS-12 and LS-14) had a better low frequency response by all accounts.

Wasn’t an issue for me as I’m not planning to record music. Wander if v1.20 made any changes to bass rolloff for those who do.

Never noticed that myself but the sort of music I record with these recorders is acoustic, non electric or amplified voice and instruments, but then that's folkies for you. These discreet recorders are great in sessions.

I tried both Windows and Mac firmware update programs for v1.20 which I downloaded from Olympus Japan’s website and am having same issue with both. Programs do not see LS-10 being connected, while it is as Mac and PC see LS-10 and allow full access to it’s files. Either V1.20 update programs have an issue and or my device. I’m still trying to find 1.10 firmware of anyone may have it somewhere in the archive. Thanks.

I picked up a LS-10 from Japan last year and couldn't get the v1.2 update to work on my current MacBook Pro or Windows 10 PC.

I got it to work by installing a Windows XP virtual machine on VMWARE Fusion and it ran ok.

I downloaded it from

https://support.jp.omsystem.com/jp/supp ... index.html

direct Link to the LS-10 page

https://support.jp.omsystem.com/jp/supp ... pdate.html

I think I had the same problem where the LS-10 wasn't picked up by the update application but using Windows XP worked (on a virtual machine)

Just loaded XP on WM virtual machine. My LS10 connects to Windows XP just fine, Windows opens all folders on the records but update app remains in the start screen and nothing happens. May be it has something to do that mine is actually LS-10s whatever that means.

It would have LS-10S on the front if it was.

Image

But from what I can gather, the LS10S was a reissued LS10 that sold without the Cubase bundle and from pictures, the screen had a brown tint, not grey.

Yep, that’s what mine reads - LS-10S. And that’s also what I know, the only difference is what you get with recorder. Don’t think there were any hardware changes. Also firmware update websites doesn’t read separate model as LS10S, only LS-10. No idea why I can’t update it.

Could you advise how the updater app screen changed during update? Mine remains the same after connection, nothing happens.

The really annoying thing is version of my LS-10 is 1.00 and there were 1.03, 1.04, 1.10 and only then 1.20 and previous owner didn't care to update ever. I was hoping to find any of the versions hoping it would maybe help upgrading to 1.20 but no files are left in the internet. Pretty frustrating.

I checked Olumpus Japan firmware update sight again and for v1.20 firmware it reads:

<Target firmware version>
Ver: 1.03, 1.04, 1.10

So my assumption is it doesn't recognize mine because mine ise v1.00.
So I think I need to somehow update it to either of the Ver: 1.03, 1.04, 1.10 and then go to v1.20.

I can't believe a firmware update file can disappear from the internet. It should definitely be available somewhere, on some mirror server or on someone's computer or on the email. Bad luck so far I guess.

It is always possible that there are hardware differences between your machine and later models which means that the later firmware simply won't work on yours. I have one or two CD drives like this - although they were admittedly pre-production versions and marked as such.
