Couple of things popped up in the latest SOS email that I think might interest quite a few folks here.
For the first-time 'how do I get started?' members, this from Rode will tick a lot of boxes for the podcast / vodcast / streamers:

Does look interesting. I’m wanting something for tracking my guitars without using the main DAW and was reviewing logic for iPad, but this looks really cool. Those keys are perfect aren’t they!

The MIDI in recording is a + makes it more useful for me.
At the moment Akai MPC Live, One, X are one of the few current standalone that do MiDI in recording.
Zoom R20 which I was interested in as a touchscreen standalone recorder mixer doesn't do MIDI in recording.
I do feel Boss, Tascam, Zoom are missing a trick by not implementing MIDI in recording into their portable smaller recorders mixers.
Also really enjoyed Tatsuya Takahashi explaining ever so simply the basics of how he and his team designed built Korg's acoustic synthesizer.

I have for sometime thought about a gizmo along the same lines except a device which inclides a suction cup. Stick it to the guitar (acoustic of course) press a record button, and off you go, although incorporating 8 tracks? well that a design challenge. But then I thought there's already a solution, a smartphone, with a 8 track app, but not quite as complex as say Cubase for Android, but just simple big touch screen buttons to emulate the original cassette multitracker, with added functionality such as cut and paste.
I do use my cellphone foir quick rtecording, just to get an idea down, but getting the tracking into the PC->DAW is a faff.

I love these ideas and even bought a MPC One. I sold it on and bought a M1 Air, because in reality it is so much easier. That said, the little recorder gives me GAS even though I know better

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.
Re: Couple of interesting products...
Why is the RØDE so expensive? I can buy a BMD ATEM Mini Pro and an interface for less!
As for the Trak thing, the iPad wipes the floor with it in terms of flexibility, and you could add a controller to that. Also, a simple template on my laptop with a control surface works better for transferring music to my DAW, since it is my DAW! It doesn't take much effort at all to concentrate on the recording and not get side-tracked.

Yep, doesn't add anything for me but it does seem to be a frequent query round these parts.

Yep I’m sure it is. But for me, my studio DAW and peripherals (controllers, pre-amps etc) is fine when I’m tracking synths and piano, but when I want to sit at the other side of the studio (no it’s not that big but has got a comfy chair I like to play guitar in ) and noodle, I just want something simple to record what I’m doing for possible work on my main studio system. I use my Kronos similarly for keyboard duties. Just switch that on and record sections for later use. I’m looking at logic on iPad which I think might win out with a little AI. This track recorder though just looks ace.

I am the same way 'inspired' if only there were something where one could just press the record button and off you go.
Ironically, I was listening to an interview with Paul McCartney and he said he considered the 'instant recorder, even going back to the cassette multi-tracker' was a hindrance in the creative process. He said back in the day, we worked on a track, and then went to a studio, and finished the track. He said ever since he bought a multi-tracker, he has gathered together a towering pile of cassettes, each containing song ideas which never went beyond a few bars. He said he had gone back to the old school way of writing, start something, then finish it, then record it, or at least let it linger in the mind till the following day, if he couldn't remember the song, then it was never meant to see the light of day anyway, and, he said "I have many of them" !!!
Of course there is always the more organic old school way of 'recording' - and that is have some manuscript paper and write down the dots. With our increasing reliance on technology, how many of us can do that these days. I remember when I was doing my music course way back when, there were amongst my fellow students those that had played music since the came out of nappies, and in their later years, they could write down 32 bars of 4 part harmony - from memory!

I can do that using my main system. A cable long enough to reach the input (you say yours is not a big room) and the remote control for the DAW (and the interface!) on the iPad (I use Studio One/RME).
