Strange M1 Sound Problem

Post by nickle15 »

I'm working on a KORG M1 that is "playing" a static sound on startup. It has something of a rhythm to it, like something is being cycled through. It is very loud! It fades out over a minute or so and then the keyboard plays normally without any further issues.

Here is a video of the problem: https://youtu.be/7g-9_7w5Lyc

We have recapped the entire synth, replaced the D/A chip, put in a new battery and restored all the factory settings. Those were the easy choices but the problem persists. Any other suggestions for places to look?

Intriguing!

The decaying nature suggests a reverb/decay effects processor clearing its memory space.

What happens if you save an initial preset with all the effects turned off?

In my world, things get less strange when I read the manual...

Thanks! We did the initialization procedure which sets every patch to an init patch. The noise is still present on startup though not as elaborate.

While the noise is in process there is a difference in sound if you move through non initialized patches so you may be on to something here. This occurrence is audible on the test video I posted.

The sounds/beat patterns aren’t related to the demo song at all (assuming it has one)?

Reliably fallible.

I’m not sure. One of the steps I took during earlier troubleshooting (because I had the same thought) was to go in and erase all the saved sequencer songs. I’m assuming those are the demo songs as I don’t think there are any others to be found. The problem remained after wiping those out.

This site has the demo songs in an mp3 format.

I can't recognise any connection between your weird noises and any of the default demo songs, and have never heard anything like it on my M1.

Well done for recording the anomaly though - it could eventually gain a cult following! ;)

Yeah I can’t find the connection either. I guess a cult following is better than nothing! :D
